“My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?” – Bob Hope
There are so many things going on during the holidays and it’s so easy to get consumed in the preparation for the festivities. Sometimes we tend to forget that though many of us are blessed to have everything we need, there are still so many who are experiencing pain, lack, loss, and suffering and usually, the holidays make these things especially difficult for those people.
I know that giving should be an all-year round thing but many of us get into the spirit of giving during the holidays. With that said, if you are thinking of ways to give back during this season, here’s how to do so…
Adopt a Family
Ask your friends or neighbors to see if they know of a family who are in need. Chances are they know a family or two. Invite them for a dinner at your house during the actual Christmas eve or day, or set a special day for them when you can prepare a meal and give them gifts that are useful – such as a grocery card. If the family has little kids, it’s okay to give the kids some toys as well.
Feed the Homeless
Inquire with your city government or with a local/area non-profit organization to see if they have any programs of feeding the homeless during the holidays and volunteer your time. If there is none, ask for permission (if need be) from the city and organize with a local church a feeding program.
Make Charitable Donations
If you’re already regularly donating to your favorite charitable donation, try increasing the value of your donation for the holidays OR if you can, select an additional non-profit organization close to your heart and donate to it. If you haven’t yet but planning to do so – choose a credible local non-profit organization or ones that work with children, families, and human trafficking.
Shop Stores That Give Back
Research stores that donate a portion of their proceeds to a charitable organization or purchase gift items that give back. Sometimes, some non-profit organizations have stores – see if you can purchase gift items from them.
I also recommend checking out The Good Stuff 2014 Holiday Sweepstakes. You can get ideas on budget-friendly gifts, gifts for enthusiasts, hostess gifts in addition to having a chance to win $100 every week and up to $500 for grand prize, which you can use as the budget for giving back!
