Over the years, as I've grown older and more mature, I learn to put a lot of things in perspective. Looking at what others don't have versus what I don't have helps me accomplish that and makes me just grateful for the things in life and be content with what I have.
It's amazing to know that the things that are easily accessible to us aren't as always accessible to the less fortunate ones. Sadly, as little and seemingly insignificant as sanitary napkins aren't readily available to the women in homeless shelters.
I must admit, there have been countless times when I've seen my individually-packed unused sanitary napkins just lying around on my bed or left in the pockets of my totes and different purses. I wouldn't be surprised if I even have some extra in my trunk organizer! Makes me feel guilty that I have these too many unused and clean sanitary napkins while there are women in homeless shelters who lack what I obviously quite have in abundance of!
One girl, Holly Sanchez, took notice of this and tweeted about it and that's how The Power to the Period came about, which is the second installment of U by Kotex®'s The Period Project. In an effort to make a difference, U by Kotex® joined forces with Holly and DoSomething.org to create the first ever donation drive for sanitary products.
Here's How You Can Make a Difference
A lot of times making a difference doesn't have to involve millions of dollars. You can make a difference in your community with what you have and what you can do.
In this case, making a difference through the Power to the Period is really easy. There are two ways.
1. Start a donation drive or
2. Buy extra unopened packages of period products and donate them in your area, beginning Thursday July 14 through Friday, September 30.
You can visit www.ubykotex.com, DoSomething.org/Period to find out more or text PERIOD to 38383 to learn how to get involved.
Another wonderful thing about this campaign is the U by Kotex® brand will also make product donations on behalf of DoSomething.org contest winners and participants can sign up for a chance to win a $5,000 scholarship. Visit www.ubykotex.com to learn more about this.
