I was at Subway the other day when the lady at the counter asked me what shampoo I use. Honestly, it’s just one of the numerous times I have been asked. I thought why not share with you my faithful readers my little hair care secret.
Awhile back, my cousin (from Miami then), while on vacation here in Houston, has introduced me to this hair serum called Moroccan Oil. She was kind enough to let me have the rest of her bottle so I can try it out myself for a few days and I loved it. The hair serum was very lightweight and even if you accidentally put a lot in your hair, it doesn’t really weigh it down because your hair absorbs the oil, making it shiny.
I am also now using their shampoo and conditioner which are sulfate and paraben free. Sulfates are preservatives commonly used in cosmetics, shampoos, and other pharmaceutical products. Supposedly, they have bactericidal and anti-fungal properties. However, some studies show that high levels of parabens are found in breast cancer tumors. So I guess, it’s not that it’s directly bad for your hair but just not good overall for your health.
Sulfate on the other hand is considered a pesticide, according to some readings I have done. Ugh! Really, my hair needs pesticide? The last time I checked, I have no lice or fleas! Since I have none, I have no need for it! Moroccan Oil shampoo and conditioner do not have paraben nor sulfate.
Honestly though, I have been using non-paraben and non-sulfate free shampoo and conditioner for years prior to learning about it and I’m perfectly fine! I did see a major improvement in my hair’s health though which is why I continue to use these products.
I must admit that because my hair is long, the maintenance can be high and expensive. Each bottle of the shampoo and conditioner costs about $22 each. That’s $44 for me aside from the $40 Oil Treatment. In a month, I have to spend a good $80. I guess for something so important to a woman, it’s not bad. Considering that I also haven’t gone to the salon in more than a year. But my budget does not always allow it, specially when other things take priority. Moroccan Oil products are available in salons only or check their website www.moroccanoil.com.
When budget is low, I turn to Dove shampoo and conditioner. I don’t believe they are paraben and sulfate free but I love that they really don’t weigh my hair down and few days of consecutive use don’t really dry them out. My aunt also has introduced me to Biolage Matrix Intensive Strengthening Masque. I have used it quite a few times and so far it has been good. Biolage products are available in your regular grocery stores, salons, and ULTA.

Tell me about it (when it comes to hair maintaince lol). I have long hair too but my hair is somewhat "fragile" so it needs alot of "therapy". I only go to the salon every 6-8 weeks for root touch-ups but I love Moroccain oil to use on a daily basis to help prevent split ends. Personally I'd highly recommen the Moroccain oil. A little goes a long way :)

I love the Moroccanoil too. However, I am surprise how you can go through a full bottle in a month. I have hair few inches below the shoulders and use about a nickel of oil per day (not much needed). So the bottle last 5-6 months.
