**WARNING** Some photos in this post may not be suitable for children. My apologies in advance for some of the blurred photos as well. The room was dark and couldn’t use flash photography.
My birthday (February 3rd) fell on a weekday this year (and will continue to be in the next 2 years!) and although I don’t normally celebrate my birthday every year, I decided to do something this year. I didn’t do anything exactly on the day of my birthday except for a dessert with some friends but I did have a post-birthday staycation at Hotel Icon (if you missed the story, you can click here) and a dinner and a show at Prohibition Supper Club and Bar.
I am pretty amazed how Downtown Houston has grown over the past couple of years. While I often frequent the area where Prohibition Supper Club and Bar is at as a photoshoot location, I didn’t know it exists. When the offer for a dinner and a show was presented, I checked out their website and got interested. I’m not a huge bar-goer and the truth of the matter is, I must confess that I am not a very outgoing person, but I do get the urge to try out things every once in awhile – apparently and surprisingly, that included watching a burlesque show.
Prohibition Supper Club and Bar is about .2 miles walking distance from Hotel Icon, which is really a couple of blocks. If you’re wearing flats, it’s a breeze! My staycation along with the dinner and show at Prohibition was the perfect combination! Not to mention that I had great company too – my mom and a couple of friends from church. I was so grateful that they joined me!
I kinda didn’t know what to expect but didn’t get disappointed at the place. Prohibition has a bar and restaurant front and in the back was the theatre and prix fixe dinner place where they hold the burlesque show. The place is very classy – a center stage with two huge and tall columns, high ceilings, nice chandelier, elegant mezzanine railings, and serpentine staircase.
The idea of the place is to watch a show while having a three-course meal. They hold two different kinds of shows I believe, one is Provocateur on Fridays (which is what we went to see) and The Moonlight Show on Saturdays.
And then the burlesque show began. It was opened by a number of dancers wearing a thong body suit and ballet shoes with laces that go all the way up to their thighs. All I can say is that those dancers motivated the heck out of me to work out! Their bodies, flexibilities, and moves were just amazing.
This lady hanging in that hula hoop is truly the burlesque queen! She was singing live while up in the air. She’s got pretty amazing voice too!
The show used great backdrops, lighting and props to enhance the performances.
Although the costumes were mostly provocative and the moves were sexy and sultry, each performance is tastefully and creatively done.
This girl is on fire!!! She ate the fire afterwards. (Shows shocked face)
Although each performance is pretty amazing, the aerial numbers were outstanding! It had my jaw dropped the whole time while watching. Okay that may be a little exaggeration but you get the point.
That moment when they called the birthday celebrants in the audience to go up the stage and the burlesque queen taught us and asked us to do the burlesque moves. It was quite embarassing for me but I played with it somehow.
With my mom and church friends.
The dinner and show is $65/person. It comes with a prix fixe 3-course meal. The first course is a simple salad with baby oak lettuces, heirloom cherry tomato, shaved onion, white mushroom and champagne vinaigrette as dressing.
For the second course, you have the option of Shrimp and Grits or Grilled Sirloin Steak. I opted for the former since I don’t eat beef. I did find my Shrimp and Grits okay. Maybe because I’m not Cajun. Ha!
The third and final course was chocolate cake, salted ganache, bordeaux raspberry sauce with toffee sauce. I think I went to heaven when I tried this. This is absolutely delicious!
If you’re visiting Houston anytime soon and are looking for places to visit or things to do, you should consider checking out Prohibition Supper Club and Bar for a sexy, seductive, fun, jaw-dropping, and creative but tastefully done burlesque show and a three-course meal. If you have never seen a burlesque show just like me, this will be a nice brand new experience! Check out their website www.prohibitionhouston.com for more information and to make reservations.
